One of the first things we learn in law school is a simple principle:
Ignorance of the law excuses no one.
Ignorantia legis neminem excusat.
The law does not stop applying simply because we didn’t know it existed.
As I study law, I’ve found myself thinking about something deeper: What about our ignorance of God?
The Philippine Constitution, in Article II, speaks of the protection of life, liberty, property, justice, and the general welfare. Article III—the Bill of Rights—places limits on government power and protects the dignity and freedoms of every person.
As a law student, I appreciate these protections.
But as a Christian, I can’t help but ask where that dignity ultimately comes from.
The Constitution protects human dignity.
The Bible tells me why human beings have dignity.
Genesis 1:27 says that God created humanity in His own image.
Before the State recognized our rights, God had already given human beings worth.
Before there was a Constitution, there was a Creator.
And yet, Scripture tells us that humanity has a problem deeper than ignorance.
We know God, yet we turn away from Him.
Paul writes in Romans 1 that although people knew God, they did not honor Him as God.
That is a frightening thought.
When ignorance is not the real problem
Sometimes ignorance isn’t simply the absence of knowledge.
Sometimes we know enough—but we don’t want to submit.
We know what is right, yet choose what is convenient.
We know what love requires, yet choose ourselves.
We know God exists, yet live as though He doesn’t.
The law can protect me. It cannot save me.
Article III can protect my liberty.
It cannot free me from sin.
The Constitution can guarantee my rights.
It cannot make me righteous before God.
A court can declare me innocent under human law.
It cannot cleanse my conscience.
That’s where the gospel becomes radically different
God’s law exposes our sin. It shows us what righteousness looks like and, in doing so, shows us how far we have fallen.
But the law doesn’t save us.
Christ does.
Jesus fulfilled the law we could never fulfill and went to the cross to bear the judgment we deserved.
He didn’t come merely to make us more informed people.
He came to make us new.
That changes how I see both law and faith.
I want to understand the Constitution. I want to understand justice, rights, authority, and the limits of government power.
But I also want to remember that there is a Lawgiver higher than every legislature, a Judge higher than every court, and a King greater than every government.
Jesus Christ.
And perhaps the greatest ignorance isn’t failing to know what the law says.
It is hearing about Christ and still refusing to know Him.
That is why Pathway exists
Not simply that people would know about Christ, but that they would know Christ.
That they would believe, belong, become, bless, build, bring, and bear.
Because the goal isn’t simply knowledge.
The goal is Christ.
Until Christ is known everywhere.
